First of all, I love the allusion to Aqua in the title. Great stuff. The progression here is really interesting. Barbie as a pretty little icon to Barbie as a sexual being. The sexuality of Barbie has always interested/horrified me. She's interesting because so many little girls play with her, and terrifying because of the stigmas she perpetuates. It's as though girls who play with Barbie are playing with a doll that is telling them to look like a busty babe, but act like the typical American good girl. The juxtaposition of these two ideas is probably one of the most confusing things about Barbie, but here you've played with the ideas in a way that communicates very effectively. My favorite one is the middle one. It cracks me up. :D Can't wait to see more, Sarah. -Susie
Thanks Susie! You're right on with all of that. It's super creepy. Girls want to BE her. But ultimately she's an object that lets you touch and play, undress, etc. Unfortunately it can often feel like girls have achieved that early goal of being a beautiful object that men can touch, play, and undress.
In that last photo, even though you know she's smiling I think Barbie looks really uncomfortable. Haven't we all had that experience, "I know what you're trying to do here, but you're doing it SO wrong"?
I like the way the photos mesh together. It is as if she was minding her own damn business and kind of got caught up in this whole cunnilingus situation.. haha like, oh, okay..sure.. I'll go ahead and.. I guess.. oh, you're already down there. LOL. I love it.
